The Auxiliary Unit has been in operation since 1989. Auxiliary Officers receive more than 100 hours of training, including legal training in powers of arrest, ethics, traffic direction and use of force training.

About the Role – How you will Contribute to the Service:

The Halton Regional Police Services (HRPS) Community Services Team is currently looking for Volunteer Auxiliary Officers (2-year Commitment) to join our team and feel the pride of making a difference by putting the Halton Community first!

This is an opportunity for anyone who has been looking for a volunteer opportunity to help serve the community and who has always wanted to learn about policing. Our volunteers come from diverse backgrounds but share a common passion for helping others in the community. They provide social support through communication, companionship, and problem-solving. Auxiliary officers assist police officers at various events across the Region, such as fall fairs, Christmas parades, and summer festivals (e.g., the Burlington Sound of Music).

You will work alongside sworn officers in a wide range of settings, including community policing programs (e.g.,Neighbourhood Watch, Bicycle Safety, R.I.D.E., crime prevention, and distributing educational materials). Duties may also include guarding crime scenes to preserve evidence, searching for missing persons, and assisting with crowd, traffic, or parade control, as well as participating in operational ride-alongs.

What is required for this role…. Your Devoted Commitment:

  • We ask volunteers to commit to two (2) years of volunteer service with Halton Regional Police Service. Full training will be provided.
  • Volunteers must commit to a flexible schedule totaling 144 hours per calendar year. This commitment does not include the mandatory training hours.
  • Willing to serve anywhere at anytime throughout the Region of Halton which includes Burlington, Oakville, Milton, Georgetown, Acton and Halton Hills)

 

Minimum Qualifications: To be considered for this volunteer position, you must:

 

  • Be a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Have successfully completed at least four (4) years of secondary school education or equivalent.
  • Not have been convicted of a criminal offence for which a pardon has not been fully granted
  • Be a fully licensed driver in Ontario having accumulated no more than six (6) demerit points.
  • Be physically able to perform the duties of an Auxiliary Officer
  • Be of good moral character
  • Be prepared to take an Oath/Affirmation of Office and Secrecy
  • If selected, cannot be employed as a security officer within Halton Region
  • Not be the holder of a private investigators license in the province of Ontario
  • The ability to speak a second language would be an asset.
  • Possess current first aid/CPR certification by the time of pre-employment checks (no later the February 16, 2026)

  • Note: The successful applicant will need to pass a background check to the satisfaction of the Service which will include reference checks with previous employers, verification of educational achievements, and a criminal background screen.

The Selection Process and Projected Timelines:

Step 1: Apply Online:  October 30, 2025, to November 17, 2025.  All applicants are required to complete and submit the following as part of their application: an online questionnaire, a written submission, and a resume. Once your application has been successfully submitted, you will receive a confirmation email acknowledging receipt.

 

Written SubmissionAlong with your resume, please submit a written statement of no more than one page that includes a brief introduction of yourself, your motivation for applying to the Auxiliary Officer role, and the impact you believe you would make as an Auxiliary Officer if selected for the Halton Regional Police Service.

 

Step 2: Resume Screening: November 18, 2025, to November 26, 2025

 

Step 3: Online Assessment: November 27, 2025 to December 2, 2025.  Selected applicants will be invited to complete an assessment through our service provider, TestGenius. The exercise will include spelling, language, and reading comprehension tasks and will take no more than 45 minutes to complete.

 

Step 4: Behavioural Interviews:  Selected applicants will be invited to in-person interviews Week of December 6thth to December 17, 2025.

 

Step 5:  Fitness Assessment (PREP):  Tentative Test Date(s): January 12 & January 13, 2026 (evening)

Step 6:  Pre-employment checks:  January 19, 2026, to February 16, 2026.  Pre-employment checks will be conducted for shortlisted candidates and will include a Psychological Assessment, Security Check, Professional References, and any additional employment verifications relevant to the specific job requirements.

 

Step 7:  Decision Making:  Week of February 17th, 2026.  All applicants will be notified of their applicant status via email.

 

Step 8:  Training:  Commences week of March 6, 2026 (training will be scheduled in the evening, weekends)
