The Auxiliary Unit has been in operation since 1989. Auxiliary Officers receive more than 100 hours of training, including legal training in powers of arrest, ethics, traffic direction and use of force training.

 

About the Role – How you will Contribute to the Service:

 

The Halton Regional Police Services (HRPS) Auxiliary Unit is currently looking for Volunteer Auxiliary Officers (2-year Commitment) to join our team and feel the pride of making a difference by putting the Halton Community first!

We are currently looking for additional members to join the Halton Regional Police Service (H.R.P.S.) Auxiliary Unit. This is an opportunity for anyone who has been looking for a volunteer opportunity to help serve the community and who has always wanted to learn about policing.

Our Volunteers come from unique backgrounds but are commonly interested in helping others in the community by offering social support, through communication, companionship, and problem-solving techniques. Auxiliary officers augment the activities of police officers at various events across the Region such fall fairs, Christmas parades, and summer festivals (i.e. Burlington Sound of Music). You will work alongside under Sworn Officers in a variety of settings and situations which includes community policing programs (i.e. Neighborhood Watch, Bicycle Safety, R.I.D.E, crime prevention and handing out educational material); guarding crime scenes to protect evidence; search for missing persons; routine crowd, traffic, or parade control; operational ride-a-longs etc.

What is required for this role…. Your Devoted Commitment:

 

  • We ask volunteers to commit to two (2) years of volunteer service with Halton Regional Police Service. Full training will be provided.
  • Be willing to dedicate a minimum of (12) hours of duty per month in addition to the yearly training and Unit meetings (144 hours per year).
  • Willing to serve anywhere at anytime throughout the Region of Halton which includes Burlington, Oakville, Milton, Georgetown, Acton and Halton Hills)

 

Minimum Qualifications: To be considered for this volunteer position, you must:

 

  •  Be a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Have successfully completed at least four (4) years of secondary school education or equivalent.
  • Not have been convicted of a criminal offence for which a pardon has not been fully granted
  • Be a fully licensed driver in Ontario having accumulated no more than six (6) demerit points.
  • Meet vision requirements of uncorrected visual acuity of at least 20/40 binocularly, corrected visual acuity of 20/20 binocularly, with normal colour vision;
  • Be physically able to perform the duties of an Auxiliary Officer
  • Be of good moral character
  • Be prepared to take an Oath/Affirmation of Office and Secrecy
  • If selected, cannot be employed as a security officer within Halton Region
  • Not be the holder of a private investigators license in the province of Ontario
  • The ability to speak a second language would be an asset. Note: The successful applicant will need to pass a background check to the satisfaction of the Service which will include reference checks with previous employers, verification of educational achievements, and a criminal background screen.

 

The Selection Process and Projected Timelines:

 

Step 1: Apply Online:  September 11, 2024, to October 23, 2024,   All applicants are required to complete and submit the following as part of their application: Complete the online questionnaire, submit written submission and resume.  Once you have successfully submitted your application, you will receive a confirmation email informing you that your application has been received.

 

Written Submission:  Along with your resume, please submit a maximum 1-page written submission to include a brief introduction of yourself, along with your motivation for applying to the role and the impact you would make as an Auxiliary Officer if selected at Halton Regional Police Service.

Step 2: Resume Screening: October 24, 2024, to November 1, 2024

 

Step 3: Online Assessment: October 31st to November 4th, 2024.  Selected applicants will be invited to complete an assessment through our service provider test genius.  The exercise will comprise of spelling, language and reading comprehension and will take no more than 45 minutes to complete.

 

Step 4: Behavioural Interviews:  Week of November 13th to November 23, 2024

  

Step 5:  Fitness Assessment (PREP):  Test Date: December 17th (evening)

Applicants selected for this stage are required to participate and pass the PREP.  You will be invited to a PREP mentoring session in advance of the testing date.  Below are links to videos that would help you with what to expect during the Fitness Assessment:

Step 6:  Pre-employment checks:  December 20, 2024, to January 20, 2025.  Pre-employment checks will be conducted for shortlisted candidates and include the following: Psychological Assessment, Security Check, Professional references, and any additional employment verifications specific to the job requirements.

 

Step 7:  Decision Making:  Week of January 19, 2025.  All applicants will be notified of their applicant status via email.

 

Step 8:  Training:  Commences week of February 3, 2025 (training will be scheduled in the evening, weekends)
